The EU might “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it calls “unwarranted” visa bans issued by the United States on five Europeans working on fighting online hate and disinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.
EU Officials Condemn US Move as ‘Coercion’
European leaders such as the French president charged Washington of “bullying and threats”, following the travel bans targeted individuals who have been central to campaigns to enact laws regulating American tech companies.
“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have spearheaded coordinated campaigns to pressure US companies to suppress American viewpoints they disagree with,” wrote a senior US official in a social media post. “The current administration will not stand for such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”
Broad Criticism From EU Nations
Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives joined the French president in criticizing the move.
The restrictions were imposed this week against an ex-European commissioner who helped draft the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as four anti-disinformation campaigners, from Germany and the United Kingdom.
A Deepening Dispute Over Regulation
The DSA is seen by Washington as a form of censorship, whereas European leaders argue the rules are essential to combat hate speech and disinformation.
This row threatens to become a facet of a much broader existing cultural and political conflict between Washington and European institutions.
