In the early hours of Saturday morning, accounts surfaced of major blasts rocking the Iranian capital, following claims from Israeli officials that it had conducted a preemptive strike.
Powerful Explosions and Plumes of Smoke Reported in Central Tehran
As per on-the-ground reports, two loud blasts were heard in Tehran on Saturday morning. Simultaneously, columns of thick smoke were seen billowing over central and eastern districts of the city.
“The nature of these blasts indicates that this is a strike involving missiles,” a media outlet reported, though it did not immediately provide additional information.
Context: Escalating Strains and Prior Events
The incident takes place against a background of severely escalated strains in the Middle East. Key developments preceding this attack involve:
- US Military Buildup: A massive build-up of American warships in the region, featuring the movement of carrier strike groups.
- Diplomatic Negotiations: Latest talks between the United States and Iran on Tehran's nuclear programme ended inconclusively, with suggestions of further discussions scheduled.
- Official Rhetoric: Before the attack, a prominent American figure had described Iran as “the leading state sponsor of terrorism” and delivered warnings regarding its weapons development.
- Diplomatic Deadline: Allegedly, a time limit of roughly two weeks had been given to Iran to resolve the atomic standoff or face serious repercussions.
Iranian Response
Reacting to prior accusations, Iranian authorities had accused the United States of spreading “falsehoods” about its defensive capabilities. They rejected claims about weapons development and casualty figures as unfounded.
These developments remains fluid, with additional reports expected as events unfold.
