Meteorological devices containing numerous packages of cigarettes have interfered with air travel in Lithuania, as the country's main airport was required to halt operations for several hours when dozens of them drifted across the airspace of Lithuania.
Air Travel Interruptions
The temporary shutdown led to the cancellation of 30 flights disrupting thousands of passengers, with officials warning that delays might continue throughout Monday.
Law Enforcement Actions
Authorities reported that 25 meteorological balloons were observed crossing into Lithuania from the adjacent country of Belarus, with two of which ending up precisely above the main terminal.
Approximately 14 of the meteorological devices sent during the weekend floated over the metropolitan zone, which is the location of Lithuania's primary metropolis and adjacent to the border with Belarus.
Smuggled Items Retrieved
At least 11 balloons transporting eighteen thousand packages of black-market cigarettes have been collected so far, though this number could rise, according to border security officials.
Regional Smuggling Pattern
While creating issues, authorities noted that "Balloons with contraband - cigarettes from Belarus - are not unusual in Lithuania, Latvia, and Poland."
Since January, 544 balloons have been observed infiltrating Lithuania from Belarus, while 966 were noted during the prior year.
Cross-Border Effects
At the same time, the north-eastern Polish territory, which also borders Belarus, has registered in excess of numerous instances in which smuggled items were delivered from its neighbor using the weather devices.
Criminal Methodology
Regarding inquiries concerning why criminal organizations employ a technique that proves especially affected by weather factors rather than simpler to operate drones, officials clarified that "Atmospheric equipment are simple mechanisms used by contraband transporters - they are less expensive than drones for carrying smoking materials from Belarus."
Border Protection Aims
Officials added that "Our services' aim is to confiscate the maximum possible amounts of illegal goods and to detain organisers and participants so that such operations become unprofitable and create minimal risk to commercial air travel."
European Tensions
The recent incidents occur during a time of increased concerns in Europe following multiple unmanned aircraft violations that have caused air traffic disruption across the region.
Parallel situations in nearby states have caused EU officials to accelerate discussions about strengthening air defences throughout the continent.
