Paris Saint-Germain Overcomes Marseille in a Shootout to Lift French Season-Opening Trophy in the Middle East.

Trophy celebration scene

PSG has now won the season-opening cup on 14 separate occasions.

Paris Saint-Germain required a stoppage-time equaliser followed by a successful spot-kick decider to overcome their arch-rivals in the Gulf and capture a fourth straight Trophee des Champions title.

The European champions appeared to be coasting towards a straightforward win in the match between the Ligue 1 champions and the Coupe de France holders after Ousmane Dembele found the scoring early on.

Yet, the southern French side struck two times late to seize a shock lead. Initially, the English forward scored from the spot-kick, before Willian Pacho unfortunately directed the ball into his own net for an own goal.

In a remarkable twist of fortune, the Portuguese striker grabbed a vital equaliser in the dying moments to force the match into a penalty shootout. PSG goalkeeper Chevalier then emerged as the key figure, stopping crucial attempts from O'Riley and Hamed Traore.

From the spot, Ramos, Vitinha, Nuno Mendes, and the young talent all converted successfully for Paris Saint-Germain to seal a convincing penalty win.

Now 14-time champions Paris Saint-Germain, who faced last season's Ligue 1 second-placed team Olympique de Marseille after completing a domestic double, have now lifted this trophy for the 12th time in the past 13 years.
