Whenever a significant prize-giving event nears, there’s always a demand for the addition of new categories to honor unsung work and fill the spirits of fans with niche passions.
My colleague has already made supporting a scary games classification. That would rule. The same goes for tabletop games, representing someone's personal cause. However, I must insist if I try to elbow in front just as with other dedicated enthusiasts, there's a strong justification for why my demand stands as crucial and important of all. Here's the proposal: We need a category for puzzle games.
The Genre Classification Challenge
Organizing artistic expressions is not a science; it remains highly personal, and inevitably generate discussions concluding with vague boundaries. This explains why movie academies don’t do it. However, it represents an essential concession within the realm of gaming, showing incredible range they hardly constitute one unified medium.
For comprehensive acknowledgment of achievement in video games to gain proper attention, and for games of all stripes to have a chance for representation, classification by type becomes crucial.
Present Award Structure
Prominent interactive entertainment events presently include classifications covering Action, Action/Adventure, RPG experiences, Fighting, Simulation and strategy titles, plus athletic and racing experiences. Between them, these six categories effectively encompass many game types, allowing placement for most games within them.
Different situation exists for brain-teasing titles. No suitable classification appears for their placement. Consider three of this year’s best games, all very different: the architectural riddles from a specific release, the pulse-pounding block-matching in a different title, and the sweetly sociological logic puzzles in another game. Which classification works within current classifications? Unfortunately, nowhere.
Recognition Challenges
There are dozens outstanding logic titles launched regularly that have no home during gaming ceremonies, except when they manage to fit classification types such as Mobile Game, VR/AR Game, or the intensely contested independent game categories.
- An iconic brain-teaser wasn’t nominated for anything during that awards season
- A different innovative game received no nominations during that ceremony
- Well-received sorting experience got ignored recently
- Limited numbers of brain-teasers barely qualified for small studio or handheld classifications
Importance of Logic Titles
Commonly they're compact experiences, but the art behind logic titles holds tremendous importance. Well-known matching games count as most engaged experiences in the world maintaining this status for many years.
The legendary block-stacking game challenges well-known building titles claiming status as most purchased experience; it additionally competes for best game of all time. Logic titles represent cornerstones to the art of video games, and engaging with almost every other genre.
The Solution and Justification
Puzzle games wouldn’t have this problem. You could fill multiple candidates interesting, varied, worthy titles annually without trouble — perhaps, with difficulty, since numerous excellent numerous deserving experiences.
To emphasize again, these represent titles that otherwise have no home in important events. Logic title developers function at the hard edge interactive creation, creating some of essential manifestations of gaming itself. Comparable to film action specialists, they warrant appreciation. We shouldn't delay 35 years.
