Zak Crawley Claims Ignorance of Stokes' Provocative 'Frail Characters' Remarks

The English opener Zak Crawley suggested he was not familiar with statements from skipper Stokes regarding the team environment as no place for "weak men".

The all-rounder made those words in multiple conversations following England's defeat in the second match of the Ashes series against the Australians previously.

Ahead of the Adelaide Test, where the visitors now face defeat with a match to spare, the captain stated he had allowed his sentiment to "drift around" within the squad.

"I've done all the talking over the past two days that I required," remarked Stokes.

But, following Crawley made a knock of 85 on the penultimate day in the third Test, he commented: "I didn't see that."

"I didn't see and wasn't really looking out for it. We take anything stated in the media with a pinch of salt," he added.

Raw Conversations and Steady Philosophy

Stokes made the "fragile individuals" comment subsequent to England were beaten in Brisbane to go 2-0 down.

The England squad subsequently went on a holiday to Noosa in the gap between the second and third matches.

Prior to this match, he said his team had held "honest" talks and he had asked them to "show a bit of dog" in their effort to stay alive in the series.

Nevertheless, Crawley asserted the guidance from Stokes and head coach Brendon McCullum had remained in line with their previous tenure in charge.

"The atmosphere has been very positive, unchanged," said Crawley. "It's just trying to be optimistic, playing our brand, with lots of freedom. We believed we could do something special going into this game."

Australia On the Verge of Rapid Series Victory

The opener's wicket late on Saturday was part of a decisive triple-strike by Australia spinner Lyon.

Lyon's triple strike in 20 deliveries – he also bowled Harry Brook and Stokes himself – left England six down for 207 in pursuit of a notional total of 435 runs.

This means, the home team require four wickets on the last day to secure an insurmountable 3-0 advantage with three matches played.

A loss will extend England's drought in Australia to 18 consecutive matches and ensure a fourth successive away Ashes series defeat.

The current battle will be completed in just 11 days of play – after England losing the initial matches in two and four days each.

Not since 1921, when the Australians sealed victory in England in eight days, has the outcome of the Ashes urn been determined more swiftly. The hosts have also won in eleven days on two other occasions in the modern era.

"It's disheartening," admitted the batsman. "We came here to regain the Ashes and we're staring down the barrel now."

"There will still be plenty to play for and we'll certainly approach it with that mindset," he continued.

"The challenge has been difficult. Australia is a very, very good side. It was always going to be hard coming here against them. They entered as the favourites coming in to it they've proven why."

Pope's Place Under Scrutiny

Although the opener's innings in Adelaide probably answers questions about his immediate future in the England team, Pope appears under threat for his position in the Melbourne Test starting December 26th.

Pope fell for 17 runs in England's second innings on Saturday, extending his poor record versus the old enemy.

In 16 Ashes innings, the Surrey man has failed to score a fifty and averages just 17.62.

A solitary other England player since 1900 – Dennis Amiss – has played an equal number of innings in the top order in Ashes Tests and recorded a lower average.

But, the opener insisted any suggestion Pope is under the microscope comes from "you guys" – meaning the press – "not inside the camp."

"The squad is fully aware how good of a player he is," said Crawley. "He has had a good year to be frank."

"He has produced several excellent innings. This is noise from the outside. There's no discussion of that nature on Ollie amongst the players," he concluded.
